Food as Medicine, for your dog

Running a business is hard work, but at House of Barkleigh, the love of dogs - and the love people have for their dogs - is what drives us.

We are proud to take a ‘Food as Medicine’ approach to dog health, and we have seen firsthand the amazing results it has.

Focusing on gut health and diet as the primary factor in overall health, our carefully & sustainably sourced ingredients are all natural, and offer your dog the best chance of a healthy digestive tract and strong immune system.

Our remedial mixes are prepared by a registered nutritionist and herbalist, and specifically formulated for dogs. Each ingredient has proven health benefits, and will have a noticeable impact on your dog’s health and condition.

Gut health in dogs has been linked with everything from anxiety to auto-immune responses like arthritis, thyroiditis, and diabetes. At House of Barkleigh, healing and disease prevention are considered a primary function of gut health.

Our healthy treats are more than just treats, they are a potent combination of whole foods and spices that are backed by science to be some of the most beneficial to the healing, and ongoing health, of the digestive tract.

The spices in our treats have strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties.

Turmeric, and its active component Curcumin, have been proven to do everything from stopping the growth of cancer cells, to having a positive impact on chronic kidney disease.

Cinnamon is a powerful antioxidant, a digestive aid, and can do everything from reducing the risk of heart disease to improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin

Ginger is another potent antioxidant. It reduces pain and indigestion and drastically reduces the chances of bacterial imbalances & infections.

All our dog treats are made from an oat base. Oats are a herb and of the most nutrient dense plant foods on earth. Some of the vitamins and minerals in oats include:

  • Copper

  • Folate

  • Iron

  • Magnesium

  • Manganese

  • Phosphorus

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine)

  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)

  • Zinc

Oats are also full of antioxidants, particularly avenanthramides, which are found only in oats. These antioxidants have been proven to benefit and soothe skin, promote artery health, and have strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Oats are full of the soluble fibre beta-glucan which is a vital component to gut health, and which lowers cholesterol, helps normalise blood sugar levels, aids in weight loss and boosts the immune system.

Our dog treats are full of pumpkin, also rich in vitamins and minerals, including:

  • Copper

  • Iron

  • Manganese

  • Potassium

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin C Vitamin B2

Pumpkins contain the antioxidants alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin. Pumpkin boosts the immune system, and regulates moisture in the gut – effectively combating both diarrhoea & constipation. Being nutrient dense, low in calories and high in fibre, it helps regulate weight, and the high levels of beta-carotene benefit both eye and skin health.

Our dog treats are made with fresh Tasmanian goat milk, which is low in lactose, and high in linoleic acids which play a vital role in immune stimulation, growth promotion, and the prevention of disease. Goat milk is a rich source of protein, calcium & phosphorous. Goat milk is also rich in oligosaccharides which protect intestinal flora against pathogens, and are important for brain and nervous system development.

Our treats contain egg, also a rich source of linoleic acids and omega-3 fatty acids. Eggs are high in protein as well as being rich in:

  • Folate

  • Iron

  • Riboflavin

  • Selenium

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin B12

Every time your dog has a House of Barkleigh treat, you are promoting and maintaining their gut health, and their overall wellbeing. So do your dog a favour, and switch to a Food as Medicine approach. Your dog will thank you over a long and healthy life.
